The Birth of La Luz Birthing I started reading birth stories. I wasn’t reading stories full of trauma and fear- these were stories of powerful, strong, hopeful women who chose to look at birth from a new angle. Birth became something beautiful to me. The book containing the positive birth stories, and other thoughts about pregnancy and birth, was called The Gift of Giving Life, by Felice Austin. It opened my mind and introduced me to a new passion: birth. As I read, I also fell in love with Ricky, and we got engaged and then married. We went to Southeast Asia together to do research in hilltribe villages. I got to sit and chat with women, up in the mountains, about their birth experiences. Again my love of birth grew as well as my admiration for mothers. They told me of their stories giving birth and each was strikingly unique. Some were unassisted and completely alone, others had support of family, while others went to the nearest hospital and gave birth with only the doctor and nurse present. I realized that birth is a moment when emotions are high and hearts are tender. It unites women all around the world. No matter the race, age, education level, number of children, or religious belief- birth unites us. It is a beautifully feminine experience. Some birth experiences are positive, while others are full of hurt. Some give birth by cesarean section, and others give birth vaginally. Sometimes the birth goes just as planned, and sometimes it takes unexpected turns. Birth is unpredictable. As I have met with women in different countries and at home, I have learned that any education a woman can receive as she prepares to give birth can be a huge benefit to her when the moment of birth finally arrives. After being married for a short time, we decided we wanted to have a baby. I got pregnant and was blessed with a healthy pregnancy. I was in nursing school, learning about maternal and infant health. I got to attend births in the hospitals. I learned so much about pregnancy and birth, and I was grateful for the knowledge. Sometimes people asked me if it made me scared to know all the things that could potentially go wrong during pregnancy and birth. This was never an issue for me. I felt empowered by the knowledge, not frightened. I enjoyed understanding what was happening inside my body and how it was designed to bring my baby out to meet the world. As I have met with other expectant mothers I have found that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Learning during pregnancy is empowering. As I worked in the community, I noticed that there were not many birth class options for Spanish-speaking mothers. I searched for programs that used hypnobirthing, a birth method that uses relaxation practices to prepare for birth, and realized that none of them offered a comprehensive course in Spanish! I searched all over the country and I couldn’t find one. Maybe one exists that I missed, but after looking for some time, I found nothing. I decided to create a birth class in Spanish. I was quickly connected with two women- Nilcer and Zussie. They were both pregnant at the time, and looking for preparation for natural birth. I created scripts for guided relaxations, which help train the body how to go into a state of deep relaxation, which is helpful during labor and birth. I began teaching and they helped me with my English-to-Spanish translations and gave me valuable feedback. They immediately loved the material, especially the relaxation training. I got to attend their births, and each was unique and beautiful. I got a couple more clients and the course continued to develop. I was happy to have found something that combined my passions (birth, maternal and infant health, Spanish, and public health) and it brought me joy. I realized I needed to give this project a name- and so La Luz Birthing was born. Although we are still in our infancy, I have big plans for this birth class. Education about healthy pregnancy and birth should be available to everyone. This class is designed to benefit Spanish-speaking mothers and although there is a focus on natural birth, it is built to prepare women for all types of birth. To learn more about what this class offers and to see how to sign up, please visit the Quienes Somos page. Please share about this class with your friends and pass on the good news! The first session of La Luz Birthing classes will begin this October!
